Spring is the perfect time to do some cleaning, and that includes your pantry. By getting rid of unhealthy foods and stocking up on nutritious options, you can set yourself up for a healthier, happier season. Here are five foods to toss for a healthier you, along with a recipe for a refreshing detox citrus juice to help you start fresh.
Processed Snacks
Get rid of those processed snacks like chips and cookies that are loaded with sugar and unhealthy fats. Instead, stock up on whole-food snacks like nuts, seeds, and fresh fruits.
Refined Grains
Refined grains like white bread, pasta, and rice are stripped of their fiber and nutrients. Opt for whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole-grain bread to keep you feeling full and energized.
Sugary Beverages
Sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks are packed with sugar and empty calories. Swap them out for water, herbal tea, or sparkling water with a splash of citrus juice for flavor.
Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and Sucralose are often found in diet sodas, yogurt, and other “low calorie” products. However, these sweeteners have been linked to a variety of health issues. Choose natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or dates instead.
Highly Processed Meats
Highly processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, and lunch meat are often loaded with preservatives and unhealthy fats. Opt for lean proteins like chicken, fish, and beans instead (definitely lean into more plant-based options).
